In spite of the fact that it is a small nation, Austria is one of the prosperous countries in the world, with one of the best figures of income per citizen. For the tourism industry, Austria is a genuine goldmine, primarily because of the stupendous Alps, the mountains that represent approximately 3 quarters of the country's total area. But not only the Alps matter here... The capital city, Vienna, is regarded as one of the most astounding capitals on earth. Situated on the famous river Danube, this is indeed an incredible urban area, with impressive buildings like the the Operhaus, the Gasometer, the Parliament palace, Rathaus, and many, many more.
But lets see how Austrians used the wonders of the Alps to create a booming travel industry. You'll find lots of ski and golf resorts in Austria, and each year millions of foreigners make a choice to spend the summer and winter holidays there, because the infrastructure is great, everyone can find hotels, motels and mountain cabins almost everywhere, the people are friendly and polite (even if they do seem to keep a distance at first), and, if somebody books rooms several months prior to going there, prices are quite low for this kind of conditions.
A great destination for golf lovers and ski addicts alike is the city of Salzburg. It is a comparatively little city, with nearly 150,000 people, but it is just great. Forget the fact that it is the hometown of one of history's music masterminds, the great Mozart... Travelers visit Salzburg thanks to the fact that it is placed at the northern boundary of the high Alps, and it's in this region that people can go to the top golf and ski resorts. Magnificent scenery, delicious food and great beer - Salzburg is one of the top cities in Europe. This town is also famous for the epic Music Festival that takes place between July and August each year. Also, they organize a smaller Easter Festival annually.
Going for a ski holiday in this country in wintertime is a favorite activity for many tourists, especially people from Holland, Spain, Hungary, Romania and the UK. Best ski resorts are Grand Tirolia, Innsbruch, Bad Gastein, Ellmau and Obertauern. Situated in various regions of the Federal Republic of Austria, these resorts are famed for their tens, or even hundreds of kilometers of ski tracks (for experts and initiates alike), and for their excellent rates and services. Many are located near picturesque communities, which are very interesting to visit.
You should go skiing in Austria at least once in your life to fully understand what is the fuss all about. Sure, seeing the Alps is really awe-inspiring even if you watch them from a distance while driving through this country, but for some, the scenery is not enough: they just need to "tame" these peaks, and it's a sensation which can not be easily forgotten. Some claim it is the most wonderful sensation in the world: just you, a pair of skis and the giant Alps.
