Are the Jack Nicklaus Signature Series Golf Set SS460x a good set of clubs?

Preparation for retirement cannot be done soon enough from every point of view. A new change in lifestyle with more time to fill requires careful planning, but how many of us actually do it? By not giving it some thought we can easily ruin the first part, if not all, of the last 25 years or so of our lives. As previously stated in the first two parts of this series, we are living longer, staying healthier and keeping fitter than ever before and by the year 2020 life expectancies will have increased by another 3 years. The average retirement age today is 57.5, so 30+ years is easily possible for this new life stage and it is worth the effort to find a satisfying, rewarding or even challenging way of life in our retirement. My thoughts on the approach and preparation aspect of this subject can be categorised as follows:

1. Consider part time employment or continuing working with reduced hours. Full time working is rewarded with status, income, role and purpose, as well as having a group of colleagues and clients to share it with. Sudden loss of this would be very stressful to cope with at a time when there could be other problem situations, such as being at home all day with your partner. It is worthwhile discussing this with your partner and there are plenty of agencies that can offer advice or counselling on this subject.

2. Make sure that you are as financially secure as is possible. There is more advice on this subject that the rest of these topics put together. The results of a computer search on retirement planning will produce more that 90% of its advice on the financial aspect. All I would add is that the regulations, certainly here in the UK, have changed quite a lot recently and more may follow in the current 2009 credit crisis, so it will pay to check the date of the advice, or consult an expert.

3. Don't forget to take advantage of the free or reduced packages available for the over 60's. Transport on buses and trains, cinema, gardens, sport (e.g. golf), and museum and gallery admission charges often offer concessions.

4. There will be an increase in leisure time. As well as taking advantage of the above, it is a good time to develop hobbies or take up new ones. As pointed out in Part 2 of this series, people tend to cope better with this aspect when they have existing interests, so it pays to be prepared and think about this well in advance.

5. Doing voluntary work can be as good for the retiree as the community it benefits. It can be a satisfying way of using skills and expertise to help others, and has the added advantage of a working environment and interaction with others.

6. Be careful about the possibility of moving home. Whilst relocating to be nearer relatives or downsizing to ease the finances may seem attractive options, the loss of your present community, friends, and organisations may not be advisable at a time when you need them the most. To summarise, getting older is, in most cases, a very gradual process. Retirement, on the other hand, is immediate and can happen overnight so a little thought and preparation on these lines will not come amiss. We began this series by stating that the overriding factor is always going to be mental and physical health, and of course this remains true. For most of us however, it is well worth the effort of time spent in reconnaissance.
