What happens to all the dead bodies and ammunition left after a large war?
Like in WWII what happened to everything, do the destroy it or use it later?
What happens to the bodies can be 1 of 3 things.
1. They receive a proper burial.
2. They are laid in mass graves to stave off an epidemic.
3. They are left were they fall.
Typically, if the bodies belong to an enemy group, they will fall into option 2. If the conflict ended in a civilized manner, option 1 would most likely happen. Option 3 tends to happen when smaller conflicts continue to happen after a large war, resources may be tied up in other areas still and cleanup is not yet a top priority.
What happens to ammunition boils down to a list of criteria:
1. Necessity
2. Cost of transportation
3. Reliability
4. Usability
5. Legality
1. Are tensions still elevated and is a large military presence still necessary? In which case, captured and surplus ammunition would most likely be given to state defense forces by the major armies in the region. For example, following WW2, much of the surplus equipment/ammunition left over from the war was sold or given to european state defense forces allied with a particular side. This is why the AK47 assault rifle was and is so prevalent in former soviet bloc countries.
2. Is it cheaper to sell surplus ammunition locally then to have it transported back to your nation? Think about the logistics here, a round can be manufactured for mere cents when produced in bulk. So the cost to make a million rounds of ammunition would be in the region of a few hundred thousand dollars vs the cost to manufacture a modern tank which is in the millions of dollars; both take up the same amount of space on a ship or plane. It is often cheaper to leave small arms related items behind and bring back larger items (aircraft, land based vehicles, etc.)
3. Can the ammunition be trusted? Ammunition does have an expiration date (it may still work after, but is considered unreliable). If the ammunition is from captured stockpile, it may be considered unreliable. In which case, it would most likely be scrapped or given away to poorer defense forces (friendly to the nation in possession). Not to mention that many countries still produce ammunition which produces a corrosive residue that is bad for the firearm firing it.
4. Can the ammunition be used in a country's standard issue small arms? Most russian calibers could not be used in standard US mil issue weapons even if you wanted to. (AK47 is 7.62mm x 59 while the M16 is 5.56mm)
5. Depleted uranium ammunition is all the rage in countries that can afford it because it offers greater penetration vs standard FMJ. Consequently, many countries have outlawed the stuff when it comes to possession outside of the state military. The same goes for the propellant used in said ammunition. Military ammunition is loaded hotter than civilian loads of the same caliber. That is why it is next to impossible to find authentic mil spec ammunition in the United states. Most military to civilian ammunition sales require the propellant be replaced with a commercial powder to demilitarize it. Depleted uranium ammunition is completely illegal for civilian possession in the US.
What I am getting at here, is there is virtually no market for complete military ammunition in the civilian market. This means that a government must scrap it for metal, sell/give it to another country, or find a civilian middleman to dismantle it and use the components to make a civilian legal cartridge.
